iPhone Software Version 2.0 Features
Apple had a press conference a few weeks back on the iPhone v2.0 software that will be released in June. I’m only going to talk about one aspect of the new software that will change the iPhone from a consumer level device that’s “nifty” to an enterprise level device that “rocks”. I will do this in a Q & A format.

Q: How can Apple make the iPhone even cooler?

A: Apple is licensing ActiveSync from Microsoft, which will enable iPhone users to sync Email/Contacts/Calendars/and Tasks from their Activesync compatible email server to their iPhone without any computer being involved.

Here’s an example that might simplify the explanation:

I create a calendar event on my iPhone that I have a dentist appointment. When I get back to the office and open iCal or Entourage my calendar will have the event automatically entered. I didn’t have to connect my iPhone to my computer to have that information sync to the computer.

Q: What email servers support this?

A: There is already a mail server that runs on a Mac that supports this. Kerio MailServer supports ActiveSync connections. Microsoft Exchange also supports this.

Q: This sounds great, but we don’t have an email server that supports this! What do we do?

A: Well, you CAN have an email server that supports this, or if you are a smaller company that doesn’t want to house your own server I have a solution for you.

HoosierMac has been hosting Kerio MailServer accounts for almost a year now. We do this for companies that don’t want their own internal email server but want the advanced features KMS can offer their company. Pricing is reasonable, starting at $5/user/month and going up to $9/user/month for advanced spam filtering. There’s no minimum for our hosting. So if you want one account then you can have one account. Please see
this page for more info.
